A few months from now, Apple is expected to release the latest versions of its operating systems. iOS 16, iPad OS 16, watchOS 9, macOS Ventura, and tvOs 16 are all available to download and test right now. After only a few weeks of distributing developer betas, Apple has now made the software available to the general public. Sign up for the Apple Beta Software Program and follow the instructions to access them.
Remember that not all bugs have been found and fixed by Apple. Before installing any beta software, make a backup of your important data (though backing up regularly is always a good practice). You will be able to remove your device from the public beta programme and revert it to an older version of its operating system if you wish.
Some of the new features in iOS 16 can be learned. These include a more customizable lock screen, as well as dynamic wallpapers. You’ll be able to stay on top of things like sports scores and subway schedules with Live Activities, while Notifications and Focus Mode have been updated as well. Landscape orientation support for Face ID and the Fitness app will no longer require an Apple Watch.

In addition, you can now edit messages you’ve sent in Messages after they’ve been sent, report spam text messages, use Wallet’s Pay Later feature, and set up email reminders in Mail. In the near future, we can expect updates to Apple Maps, CarPlay, and Family Sharing, to name just three. In addition, there will be a «extreme» security option for high-profile users.
With iPadOS 16, you’ll have more control over how to resize apps with overlapping windows, for example. Only iPads with M1 processors can use some of these features. There is also support for external displays, Google Drive-style document collaboration, and (later this year) SharePlay in Game Center.
MacOS Ventura is also a multitasking-focused operating system from Apple. It’s possible to organise the windows on the right-hand side of your screen by app using the Stage Manager tool. The Mail app will include an undo send feature, as well as the ability to share Safari tab groups and a new security feature called passkeys, which will use Face ID and Touch ID for authentication. A webcam for your Mac will also be possible with an iPhone.
The fitness features are getting a major upgrade in watchOS 9. Distance and time intervals will be available to you for workouts. You’ll be able to see what heart rate zones you’re in while exercising or sleeping, too. Additional features include improved sleep tracking and medication reminders, according to Apple.
When it comes to tvOS 16, there are fewer updates than on other platforms. The addition of full support for the Matter smart home standard is one of the most significant updates. tvOS will support Nintendo’s Joy-Con and Switch Pro controllers, just like on iOS 16.
With this year’s OS updates, Apple will stop supporting some older devices. For example, an iPhone 8 or later is required to run iOS 16.
Lockdown Mode and subheading details have been clarified in an update at 2:32 p.m. ET on Monday, July 11.
